heritage Projects

Free Range is a collaborative heritage and community consultancy specialising in the research, delivery, coordination and evaluation of people-centred heritage projects. We bring extensive experience of managing community-led heritage programmes that balance strong governance and planning with creative, inclusive engagement.

Working closely with churches, community groups, local authorities, schools, archives and cultural organisations across Essex and Suffolk, our approach is rooted in research and co-production. This ensures heritage activity reflects place, people and lived experience while remaining accessible, engaging and meaningful to diverse audiences. We place a strong emphasis on sustainability, capacity-building and learning, aligning closely with the National Lottery Heritage Fund’s Investment Principles.

Collaboration is at the heart of effective project delivery

At Free Range, we believe the most successful heritage projects are built on strong, trusted partnerships. Our approach to project management is rooted in collaboration, bringing together the right people, skills, and resources to deliver meaningful, place-based outcomes that respect and celebrate local heritage.

Working across sectors, including local authorities, charities, cultural organisations, businesses, and volunteers, we create joined-up approaches that harness shared expertise, unlock funding opportunities, and connect projects into wider community and heritage networks.

Witches, Legends and Curious Tales

The Witches, Legends and Curious Tales mini-festival was created within 7 weeks to meet the timelines set by budget criteria. The resulting festival was a considered exploration of two themes – the victims of the Suffolk Witch Trials and the more unusual elements of Babergh and Mid Suffolk’s history. The programme included map creation, assets, walks, talks and film screenings and was incredibly well attended. The legacy of the festival is the creation of a touring exhibition supported by The Hold.

stories and spires – st. andrew’s church marks tey

As part of a National Lottery Heritage Fund project, Free Range Collective delivered the Stories and Spires heritage programme alongside the wider rebuild of the tower at St Andrew’s Church, Marks Tey. Clare Lucas and Liz Baalham worked collaboratively to strengthen the project through new partnerships, inclusive community engagement, and enhanced interpretation.

The research-led programme explored the church’s history, architecture, and ecology through creative events, school-led activity, exhibitions, and oral history, with lasting legacy secured through permanent and digital interpretation.
